A major part of Dum Dum Road and its adjacent areas went under water as the Bagjola canal, the main drainage channel in the area, is overflowing following repeated spells of rain.

A breach on the culvert over the canal has further aggravated the situation as the movement of heavy vehicles, including buses, has been suspended on the stretch.

Motijheel and the areas around Hanuman temple and Private Road are among the stretches that were waterlogged and inaccessible even on Tuesday.

“I have been living in the area for a long time but have never suffered such waterlogging,” said Anindya Naha, a resident of the area.

Surajit Roy Choudhury, a member of the administrative council of South Dum Dum Municipality, attributed the problem to the overflowing of the Bagjola canal. “We are in a helpless situation and are waiting for the water to recede naturally,” he said.

The 40km-long canal is the main drainage outlet for South Dum Dum, New Town and Bidhannagar.
