A team from the Calcutta Municipal Corporation spotted larvae of the dengue-causing Aedes aegypti mosquito in at least two places on the Jadavpur University campus on Tuesday.
The visit came a day after a 23-year-old student of the university died of dengue at Belle Vue Clinic.
The civic team also came across heaps of garbage on Tuesday at several places that could provide potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.
JU registrar Snehamanju Basu was present during the visit.
Mounds of garbage at several places and stagnant pools of water painted a picture, which does not augur well for the university at a time when dengue cases are on the rise.
Mayor Firhad Hakim told reporters on Monday: “No effort is made to clear garbage on the (JU) campus. We will be revisiting the university to spread awareness about dengue again”.
The visiting team sprayed larvicide and destroyed potential mosquito-breeding sites.
Registrar Snehamaju Basu said: “The team from the corporation pointed out that a dilapidated building of (National Cadet Corps) on the campus was laced with larvae of the dengue-causing Aedes aegypti mosquito. I spoke to the person in charge of the NCC so the team could destroy the mosquito breeding sites during their visit”.
“The visit of the team was fixed earlier as many of our students residing in the hostels were suffering from Dengue.
Late on Monday, registrar Basu issued a circular to all JU departments and units saying that “accumulation of stagnant water without cleaning” is not allowed on the
campus.
The circular was issued in response to a notice from CMC’s vector control department.
