A division bench of the high court on Wednesday stayed an order passed by
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the court related to alleged irregularities in the selection of candidates in medical courses through the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).

Earlier this month, Ishita Soren of Bankura had moved a case before Justice Gangopadhyay alleging that she failed to get a slot in the medical course despite scoring the required marks in the NEET and being eligible for admission in the reserved quota.

She had also alleged that 27 candidates had gained admission by furnishing fake certificates to claim eligibility under the reserved category. She had made all of them parties to the case.

Following Soren’s petition, Justice Gangopadhyay asked all 27 candidates to file affidavits stating their stand.

Last Friday, almost all the affidavits were filed. After going through them, the court apparently found irregularities in admission under the reserved category and asked the CBI director to appear before it virtually on Wednesday.

But on Wednesday the state moved an appeal before a division bench headed by Justice Soumen Sen and alleged that the trial court had issued the order without hearing it. The bench issued a stay on Justice Gangopadhyay’s order and decided to hear the case in detail.
