The school education department has asked district inspectors of schools (DIs) to serve a copy of a Calcutta High Court order on the 1,694 candidates who, the court said, were “illegally appointed in the post of non-teaching staff” in government-aided schools by the West Bengal School Service Commission.

Justice Biswajit Basu gave the order on December 22.

The court order says: “It appears from the said chart (filed by the CBI) that the candidates who even failed to secure a single mark (in the written test conducted by the commission) have been given appointment.”

The commissioner of school education on December 23 sent a letter to the DIs stating: “As per order of the high court in the matter…. Copy of the said order (by Justice Biswajit Basu) please be served upon the candidates concerned as per the list within three days from the date of receipt. Thereafter compliance report may please be submitted by the next five days.”

The WBSSC conducted the third regional-level selection test for the appointment of Group D staff in 2016.

The written test was conducted when Subires Bhattacharyya, who was arrested in September this year in connection with the allegedly illegal appointment of assistant teachers for classes IX and X in government-aided schools and non-teaching-staff by the WBSSC, helmed the commission from 2014 to 2018.

The court order says: The board (the state secondary education board) issued appointment letters only to 1,694 candidates. The learned advocate for the state shall take steps for the service of the copy of this order upon the concerned candidates through the district inspector of the schools (Secondary Education)…”

An official in the office of the district inspector of schools in Kolkata said they were in the process of serving the court’s order.

“The school-wise record has been drawn. We will serve the order on the candidates in a day or two,” said the official.
