Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court on Monday issued an order asking the principal secretary of state school education department and the chairman of School Service Commission to “consider” whether a blood cancer patient could be given a teacher’s job on humanitarian grounds.
The patient, a woman, had appeared in the 2016 Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for appointment in school as a Bengali teacher for classes IX and X. The petition says she had ranked 186 but those who scored below her got jobs. Citing medical reports, her counsel claimed that Rs 12 lakh was needed immediately for her treatment.
Justice Gangopadhyay offered her some other job. But she said she would like to get a teacher’s job. The judge asked the secretary and the chairman to take up her case so the money for treatment could be arranged.
