Team Rohan, Team Jiko, Team Amrit, Team Guddu and Team Sammya. These were the five teams, named after five captains who led residents of CA Block to play an exciting tournament of soccer. The games were four-a-side, held on a single day and organised at BA-CA Park.
Team Amrit, which defeated Team Jiko in the final by 1-0, emerged champions. Not only did they lift a glittering trophy, they also took home a cash prize of Rs 1,600. Abhiroop Sarkar, of Team Amrit received the Aruna Basu Memorial Trophy for being the highest goal scorer. He scored two goals in the tournament, including the one that won them the final game.
“We thank the CA Block Citizens Association for organising this tournament which was full of excitement. We particularly thank Mridul Murarka, Amrit Sinha and Joydeep Ghosh who worked hard to make the event successful and also entertaining,” said Amrit Sinha of the winning team.
“Our team was tired and, we are not professionals either. The slushy conditions on the ground made it difficult for us to give 100 per cent,” said Jiko (Souradip Basu), captain of the runners-up team. A number of residents of CA Block as well as a few from outside the block had gathered to watch the tournament, which consisted of eight-minute halves with a two-minute break.
Not just goals and trophies, also on offer was lunch for all those who had gathered at the ground at BA-CA Park to play or watch the matches. “We look forward to organising such an event, which essentially illustrates the unity and community spirit among our block residents, on a bigger scale with larger participation,” said Jibadip Bhaduri, a governing body member of the CA Block Citizens’ Association.
