Mukherjee said she had locked the first-floor rooms around 10pm on Monday and went upstairs where she lives with her family.

The ground floor of the house is also uninhabited and mostly remains locked.

Mukherjee said she heard the sound of gushing water on the first floor on Tuesday morning. She opened the door to find that it had been burgled.

All the bathroom fittings were missing. “A gold locket and Rs 40,000 have also been stolen,” Mukherjee said.

The burglars had entered the house by removing the window pane of the washroom, police said.
