The Botanical Survey of India, Central National Herbarium and BSI-ENVIS resource partner on Biodiversity (Flora) Howrah, jointly in collaboration with Swapnopuron Shiksha Niketan (an education initiative by Swapnopuron Welfare Society) Hingalganj, North 24 Parganas, observed Ozone Day 2022 on September 16.
The team of Botanical Survey of India (BSI) visited the remotest school and organised a ‘Save Ozone-Save Life’ awareness rally around the schools in the surrounding area of Hingalganj block, located at the Indo-Bangladesh international border and the Sunderbans.
Dr S.S. Dash, scientist, in charge of the technical section of BSI, joined the event virtually and inaugurated the session by emphasising the significance of the Ozone Day, the concept of good ozone versus bad ozone and enlightened students about the Montreal Protocol.
Soma Bose, vice principal, Swapnopuron Shiksha Niketan, expressed her gratitude to the Botanical Survey of India for organising the programme.
The movie, Reset Earth: One Ozone, One Planet One Chance, was screened. A quiz competition on ozone was also organised where six teams of 12 students from different nearby schools took part. Raihan Gazi and Deep Das got first prize, while Tanuska Bhattacharya and Urmi Haldar received the second prize. Shyan Pramanick and Snehasis Mondal secured the third position in the Ozone Day quiz competition. All winners were felicitated with trophies, medals and certificates by organisers.
On this occasion, Mahua Pal, botanist, Central National Herbarium, informed the participants about the re-introduction of cheetahs in India at Kuno National Park.
Mahua Pal, Sanjay Kumar, Shabnam Bandyopadhyay and Somnath Nandi from the Botanical Survey of India, Howrah were present. Also, Bikash Vishwas, Abhijit Banik, Tauqeer Sardar, Jyotirmay Pal and Sujoy Sarkar from Swapnopuro Shiksha Niketan were a part of the programme.
