Presidency University is going to admit undergraduate students this year on the basis of marks obtained in the board exams, said a member of the admissions committee.
A section of the students recently held a sit-in demanding reintroduction of entry tests.
The practice of admitting students through entrance tests was disrupted in the past two years because of the pandemic and students were admitted based on their Plus-II board exam marks.
The Presidency Alumni Association had written to education minister Bratya Basu last month about the need to restore admission tests at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
“In a recent meeting of the admissions committee, attended by all departmental heads, it was decided that Presidency would admit students on the basis of board marks. Details will be announced after the CBSE Class XII board results are published,” a teacher said.
“Marks of the secondary board exams, pre-board rehearsal exams and performance in the school tests could also be considered.”
Presidency will not hold entry tests because the JEE board, the exam conducting body that held the tests on behalf of the university, lacks the wherewithal to organise the exams at a short notice, a JEE board official said.
Calls and text messages to Presidency vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia went unanswered.
Jadavpur University has resumed admission tests in humanities. Four science departments have decided to introduce entry tests this year.
