A BMW 3 series car speeding towards the airport from New Town hit a hatchback and both vehicles crashed into the pavement near a traffic signal control kiosk, police said.
The accident took place early on Sunday. The front of both cars were severely damaged but the occupants — the owners of the vehicles, who were at the wheel — suffered only minor injuries.
A senior officer of the Bidhanngar Police Commissionerate said the BMW was being driven at a high speed. The traffic light on the airport-bound flank of the Major Arterial Road (MAR) was red but the driver chose to ignore the signal and sped through.
The hatchback, a Toyota Etios Liva, which was headed towards New Town police station from Pride Hotel, was taking a right turn when the BMW crashed into its front at a very high speed.
"The impact was such that both cars ended up mounting the pavement and at least one of them rammed into a kiosk from where traffic lights are controlled," the officer said.
The impact of the crash left both cars' front badly damaged. Their bumpers had come off.
The airbags of the BMW had deployed, which saved the driver from suffering any grievous injury.
Passing motorists and residents alerted a police patrol team nearby. By the time the police reached the spot, the drivers of both cars had gone to a nearby private healthcare unit. They were treated for their injuries and discharged.
The man who was at the wheel of the BMW stays at a housing complex in New Town.
Cars and bikes being driven at high speed are a common sight in New Town at night.
The MAR is a 10.5km-long three-lane artery that cuts through New Town and connects it with Salt Lake on the one end and airport on the other.
There are multiple traffic signals and speed cameras on the road but a section of motorists drive through the artery at a high speed.
The police conduct regular checks and set up speed cutters in the form of guardrails but accidents are common on the road.
