A woman in her twenties who was walking towards a bus stop was allegedly teased and molested by two bike-borne men in New Town's BB Block late on Wednesday.

Raju Majumder, 27, and Shabuj Shil, 21, were arrested on Friday on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman with New Town police station.

An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said the men were at a roadside tea stall when they saw the woman and started passing lewd comments at her.

The woman, who works in a restaurant, kept walking but as the taunts grew louder, she walked back and asked the men why they were harassing her, the officer said.

“She tried to film the incident on her cellphone but Majumdar, who was on the pillion, grabbed her hand and tried to snatch her phone. Shil, who was on the rider’s seat, started the engine and tried to speed away. The woman was dragged for a few feet before she fell on the road,” said the officer.

A few minutes later, a patrol team from New Town police station spotted the bruised woman on her knees, crying.

“The officer leading the patrol team first gave her water. She then narrated the incident to the cops, after which the team alerted all units. She was taken to a healthcare facility, where she was given first-aid,” said the officer.

The cops then scanned footage of CCTV cameras installed in New Town's BB Block.

“One of the cameras captured the entire incident. We checked the woman's phone. The men’s faces were visible in the short clip she captured,” the officer said.

The men were tracked down and picked up from their homes. Majumdar stays at a rented accommodation in BB Block and Shil is from Jatragachi Vivekanandapally, near Rajarhat.

They have been charged under various IPC sections, including 294 (punishment for obscene act), 307 (attempt to murder), and 354D (stalking).

The woman told this newspaper that she was fortunate that a police patrol team was nearby and reached the spot where she was lying in time.

“The perpetrators would not have been caught had there been no police team,” the woman said.

In September, two women walking home from a dance rehearsal were stalked and harassed by men unloading sand from a truck in New Town’s BC Block.

In August, an 18-year-old woman returning home on an electric scooter with her 13-year-old brother was chased and teased by a biker on a New Town service road.
