An app bike rider carrying a pillion passenger slipped on the tram track on Vivekananda Road and fell in front of a large commercial vehicle that ran him over on Friday morning.
Police said Suman Rana, 28, a resident of Howrah, was riding his app-bike when the incident happened on the tramline on the eastern slope of the Manicktala bridge in north Kolkata.
Rana, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to hospital where he was declared dead. The pillion rider — Raveena Jaiswal, a resident of Taltala in central Kolkata — was wearing a helmet, suffered multiple injuries and has been hospitalised.
Officers of Narkeldanga police station have seized the bike and the JCB machine but its driver has fled.
‘Robbers’ from Uttar Pradesh held in Sonarpur
Two brothers, who were wanted in a heist at a gold loan company in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, were arrested from South 24-Parganas’ Sonarpur on the southern fringes of Kolkata on Thursday night.
A joint team of Uttar Pradesh police and Sonarpur police station raided the rented house of Narendra and Arun Yadav. “They were living with their mother (Rajkumari). When they realised that police had come, they started to throw broken tiles on the officers. Six officers were injured,” an officer said.
Their mother was arrested on Friday morning.
The brothers were allegedly part of a team that had robbed the firm’s office and left with 19kg ornaments.
