A young motorcyclist riding with two others died in an accident at the Park Street-Rawdon Street crossing early on Tuesday.
Police said SM Mujjammal Gause, 19, was riding at a high speed and lost control of the two-wheeler that skidded on the thoroughfare. None of them were wearing helmets, cops said.
Gause, a resident of Beniapukur, was taken to NRS hospital where he succumbed to his head injuries.
His friends Mohammad Hasan Nawaz, 19, and Mohammad Adil, 21, were treated and discharged from Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
The accident happened around 3.30am. On analysing CCTV footage, it was clear that there were no other vehicles that could have collided with the bike, an officer said.
“The motorcycle was moving at a high speed and appeared to have lost control. It had skidded, throwing its occupants on the road,” the officer said.
More than two persons riding a two-wheeler and riding without helmets are offences under the motor vehicle rules.
Officers of the traffic department said it was most important to drive within speed limits when roads are empty. “Unfortunately, people tend to speed when they find the roads empty. But that makes them most vulnerable to collisions or even skidding as in this case,” said an officer of east traffic guard.
