Teams from the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation reached several parks with grass-cutting equipment.

One of the teams finished the clean-up work at the CK-CL Block park on Sunday.

Till Wednesday, at least four other parks, including the ones at DL Block and BJ Block, were cleaned of weeds and creepers.

The Telegraph had reported on multiple occasions about the dismal state of several parks across Salt Lake that once used to be popular hangout zones for residents and office goers alike.

All parks in Salt Lake are maintained by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and of late several have fallen into disrepair and sport broken lights.

The play furniture, including swings, see-saws and merry-go-rounds among others, in all most all the parks need immediate attention.

Deepak Choudhury, a resident of CL Block said that the park in his block resembled a mini forest before the clean-up drive started.

The condition of the park forced him stop his children from visiting the park.

“There have been several sightings of snakes inside the park. I understand that this is their natural habitat but I did not want to take risk with my children. Now that the civic body has cleared up the park, I will take my kids to the park once again,” said Choudhury.

Durga Puja is organised every year in all most all the block parks in Salt Lake.

A section of residents said that it was high time that the clearing up drive was intensified.

“We have been constantly alerting the authorities about the state of the parks. They must start clearing not only the weeds but also repair the broken lights and furniture in the parks,” said a resident of FE Block.

Mayor Krishna Chakraborty said setting things right at the parks and revamping them will be done soon.

“As of now we are focussing on cleaning up the weeds and tall grass from the parks. Urgent repairs will be carried out and the process of redeveloping the parks will be speeded up,” she said.

According sources in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, the parks in the township had last undergone a thorough repair in 2015.

At a park in FD Block, several trident lights are broken and some of them stopped functioning a few months ago. Electrical wires stick out dangerously from some of the lamp posts.

At an BD Block park, the children segment is almost inaccessible with tall weeds and creepers. The play furniture such as swings, slides and merry-go-rounds lie in neglect. Rusty nuts and bolts stick out of many of them, posing a risk to the children.
