“I wish everyone a very happy New Year, irrespective of class, creed and religion,” she said, before leaving the hospital. Mamata did not move her right hand while speaking and gestured through her left hand.

The chief minister has been to SSKM Hospital on multiple occasions this year.

In her last known visit, Mamata went to SSKM after returning from Spain and the UAE in September.

Following her last visit to the hospital on September 24, a senior official at SSKM said she had suffered an injury to her already injured left knee.

In July, the chief minister had undergone a microsurgery at SSKM to reduce pain in the left knee, following an injury while alighting from a chopper after an emergency landing near Siliguri in June.

After Friday’s procedure, Monimoy Bandyopadhyay, the principal of Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (SSKM Hospital), issued a statement.

“The chief minister came today for routine check-up. During the routine check-up, one small operative procedure was found to be necessary on her right shoulder at the site of old injury,” he said.

“It was performed at the Woodburn (block) OT. She is now fit to be discharged and at this moment she is having tea with the doctors,” Bandyopadhyay added.
