The Infectious Diseases Hospital in Beleghata in northeast Kolkata added 35 Covid critical care beds on Tuesday.
The hospital plans to keep these additional beds reserved for Covid patients for the time being and use them for general patients once the pandemic is under control.
“These beds will be reserved for Covid patients. In future, when the pandemic is under control, we can use them to treat other patients,” said Anima Halder, the principal of the ID Hospital.
Twenty-five of these beds were set up with funds from Capgemini, a multinational information technology services and consulting company.
All infrastructure associated with the creation of the 25 beds, including equipment, have been funded by the company.
The other 10 beds have been opened with funds from the state health department.
After Tuesday’s addition, the hospital has 68 critical care beds for Covid patients.
“These apart, there are 10 critical care beds for non-Covid patients,” said Halder.
An official of the hospital said the newly-added CCU beds would make them better prepared in the event of a third wave of Covid infections.
“The new beds make the hospital better prepared to admit critically-ill patients,” said the official.
On Tuesday, the hospital had 13 patients in the Covid critical care unit, said another official.
