A 54-year-old resident of Behala in southwest Kolkata, who had got involved in a scuffle with one of his neighbours over a relatively trivial issue last week, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Monday, police said.

A case under the Indian Penal Code section related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been initiated against Dipak Shaw.

He was at large till Monday evening.

The incident had happened on Mahendra Banerjee Road near Behala on May 4.

Balwinder Rai, who the police said occasionally worked as a car washerman, had allegedly got into a fight with Shaw.

“The problem started when Rai had asked Shaw for liquor. Shaw allegedly refused. The neighbours then got engaged in a scuffle, during which Shaw allegedly pushed Rai and he fell on the ground,” said an officer of the south-west division.

“Rai was later taken to a hospital where doctors detected a waist fracture and multiple injuries in the head,” the officer added.

Soon after the incident, Shaw took Rai to his house and called the latter’s elder brother Upinder, who shifted the injured home and then to the hospital.

Upinder, who is a driver by profession, lodged a complaint against Shaw with Parnasree police station.

Based on the complaint, the cops drew an FIR against Shaw under the Indian Penal Code section dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The police said they had raided Shaw’s home but did not find him there.

“We are examining Shaw’s family members and trying to arrest him,” said an officer in the police station.

If convicted, Shaw could be sent to jail for 10 years.
