A five lakh-litre capacity reservoir along with a booster pumping station was inaugurated in southwest Kolkata’s Behala on Friday.

The semi-underground reservoir and the booster pumping station will benefit people living along Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani, including residents of Madan Mohan Tala, Green Park and Muchipara under Ward 122 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

“About 20,000 people will benefit because of the new pumping station,” said Soma Chakraborty, the councillor of Ward 122. “The pressure of water was low in these areas earlier,” she added.

The KMC spent Rs 1.4 crore and took 18 months to complete the station.

A senior official of the KMC said the booster pumping station would be operational from Saturday morning.

Behala gets its daily potable water from the Garden Reach water treatment plant. The water from Garden Reach will be stored in the reservoir and then pushed into the network with the help of pumps in the station.

“The households that used to receive very less or did not receive any potable water will receive a decent volume of water now,” said an official of KMC’s water supply department.

The KMC also laid 1.5km of new water pipelines to connect the booster pumping station with the network that existed already.
