“The man with whom she stayed has been detained for questioning. The body has been sent for post-mortem,” said a senior officer of the Bidhannagar police commissionerate.

According to the police, the couple had rented the apartment three years ago.

“The man returned home on Saturday night and found the apartment locked from inside. He knocked on the door several times but there was no response. He then alerted his neighbours and the police,” the officer said.

The police broke open the doors and found Sweta hanging from the ceiling of one of the rooms, the officer said. She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead.

“No suicide note was found. Sweta Rani’s family has been informed about her death,” the officer said.

The woman’s family did not lodge any complaint till Sunday evening.

“We are trying to find out whether she was under any pressure that drove her to suicide. The person she lived with is being questioned.” the officer said.

An unnatural death case has been started. “The nature of the case may change if any evidence emerges,” the officer said.
