The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has issued a showcause notice to Baguiati police station following the alleged murder of two teenagers, whose bodies were dumped in a canal.
The commission has sought to know why they were not informed when there was a case of violation of child rights and why the information was not uploaded on the portal on missing children, commission chairperson Ananya Chatterjee Chakraborti said.
“The commission has to be informed within 24 hours if there is any violation of child rights, but there was no such intimation to us,” said Chakraborti.
“There is a track-child portal where information about missing children or individuals has to be uploaded. That helps to track a person because all police stations in the country get an alert.”
Bidhannagar police said they had “followed all standard operating protocols” after the kidnapping case was registered.
The deputy commissioner (detective department) of the Bidhannagar commissionerate, Biswajit Ghosh, had said on Tuesday that all SOPs were followed and “due sensitivity was maintained as police were under the impression that the boys were still under the captivity of the kidnappers, who could harm them”.
The commission took ‘suo motu’ cognisance of the death of the two minor boys and issued a show-cause notice to the officer in charge of Baguiati police station, the commission said in a press release issued on Wednesday.
The commission is expecting a response within 24 hours, failing which they will recommend action.
“The commission conveys its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and will assist them in all respects through the investigation process,” the panel said in a statement.
