A clash broke out between two groups in Howrah’s Nazirgunge and the family of Waijul Khan, a Trinamul leader from the locality who was murdered in November 2021, was attacked on Saturday night.
Two men were arrested on Sunday afternoon in connection with the violence.
Two members of Khan’s family were injured in the attack and admitted to hospital.
Waijul’s wife alleged that Masood Alam Khan, alias Guddu Khan, and his men had fired repeatedly and attacked the house on Saturday night.
“Guddu, who had left Trinamul in 2021, now wants to return to the party. He and his men attacked us because he thinks we are preventing his return to Trinamul,” she said.
“Guddu’s men barged in after firing a few rounds in the air, abused us and beat us up. We all huddled in a room after locking it from inside,” a member of Waijul’s family said.“Armed with rods, bamboo sticks and country-made guns, they went on the rampage in the locality.”
Guddu and a man identified as Kamrurjaman Khan were arrested on Sunday afternoon.
Residents of Nazirgungesaid Guddu had projected himself as the Trinamul candidate for the Assembly polls in 2021, but the party decided against fielding him. Guddu then joined the BJP.
Shooting accidental: Probe
Preliminary findings of the inquiry against an assistant sub-inspector of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate for allegedly firing from his service gun, leaving a colleague injured, suggest it was a case of accidental firing, officers said.
Proceedings against assistant sub-inspector Abhijit Ghosh are on to find out whether he was negligent in handling his gun, the officers said.
“According to a report submitted by an officer of the rank of deputy commissioner, the incident was a case of accidental firing. No other intention has emerged till now,” said Bidhannagar police commissioner Gaurav Sharma.
Sub-inspector Kaushik Ghosh, 38, who suffered a bullet injury in his left foot after Abhijit Ghosh’s gun went off on Thursday morning, was discharged from AMRI Hospitals Salt Lake on Saturday. “He has been asked to rest for three months,” said an official of the hospital.
