The 73-year-old woman who was assaulted and robbed in her house in Tallah’s Khelatbabu Lane while she was alone on Diwali night was unconscious till Saturday evening, her family members said.
Padma Mandal has been admitted in a south Calcutta hospital with multiple injuries on her head, ear and eye after the assault on Thursday night.
Police said they were yet to find the person who seems to have known that the family members were away and the elderly woman would be alone at home.
“She is yet to open her eyes. She has been badly hit on her head and face. One of her eyes has a huge swelling and her ear was bleeding, too,” said Mandal’s son-in-law Sunil Shaw’s mother Shanta.
Mandal was hit on her head with a blunt object and one of her eyes was hit with a sharp object like a screwdriver, cops said.
A senior police officer said they were in the process of checking if the photograph of the suspect obtained from CCTV footage matched with anyone who had a criminal record of burglary or theft in the Calcutta police area.
“It is very important to record the victim’s statement. We are waiting for her to recover and recall the incident,” said an officer.
