The 38 families that lost their homes to a devastating fire at Anandapur on Sunday received food and water at a makeshift shelter close to their gutted homes.

Sources at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said the affected people at Shramik Pally would stay at the temporary shelter, which has electricity connection, till they are rehabilitated.

Sources in the KMC said the gutted colony can be rebuilt once funds are
made available by the government.

Several people whose homes have been ravaged said they had not been given any assurance that their homes would be rebuilt.

The families lost most or all of their belongings to the fire and queued up outside Anandapur police station on Monday to report their loss of identity documents.

“We are getting food supplies, water and electricity. There is an arrangement for power connection, too. We can recharge our mobile phones at the shelter. But if I charge my phone from that point, I will have to wait near it, which is not possible. So, many of us are getting our phones charged at a friend’s or a relative’s house nearby,” said Subrata Purkait, the breadwinner of a family of four.

Sudip Naiya, who appeared in the Madhyamik examinations this year, was among those who went to the police station to report loss of their possessions. The fire destroyed Sudip’s Madhyamik admit card and all other identity documents.

As many as 140 people, from 38 families, were left homeless after an LPG cylinder blast in one of the houses at Shramik Pally — not far from EM Bypass in Anandapur — triggered a fire that engulfed the entire colony on Sunday morning.

No one was trapped or injured.

The local councillor (Ward 108) of the KMC, Susanta Ghosh, said they were providing “all possible support” and things of daily use to the fire-affected people.
