A 34-year-old woman who had jumped in front of a Dakshineswar-bound Metro train on Sunday afternoon was saved following the alertness of the motorman, who applied emergency brakes and brought the train to a grinding halt.

The incident happened around 3.25pm at Masterda Surya Sen station in Bansdroni. As the suicide bid was foiled, Metro officials swung into action and switched off the power momentarily before RPF personnel jumped on the tracks and lifted the woman and brought her to the platform. The power was restored soon and the train departed in two minutes.

Metro services were not hampered, officials said.

The woman apparently told the station master that she was trying to end her life due to family problems.

Metro officials contacted her family and informed the police of Bansdroni PS. Her family members, who live nearby, rushed to the station and the woman was handed over to them in the presence of cops following official formalities. The woman, however, suffered minor injuries.
