A group of 10 women rehearsed for five days and put up a dandiya and garba performance at New Town’s AE Block that took the audience straight to Gujarat.
The Saptami special, a first of its kind for the block, was a medley of Bollywood songs like Chogada tara, Udi udi jaaye and Nagada sang dhol baaje.
“We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves; all the dancers were very sporting”, said Manisha Saha, one of the participants. “It was challenging but I guess teamwork makes the dream work,” added another dancer Tanaya Pal.
The team comprised homemakers and working women with no experience in dance. “The internet came to my rescue. I learnt both garba and dandiya from the Net and choreographed the steps. We picked it up in five days,” said Meenakshi Roy. “I was inspired by the cultural diversity of India. Celebrating a dance form from the western part of India in the east would truly align with the motto of ‘Ek Bharat sreshtha Bharat’.”
