“We will run 10 additional trains from Wednesday. The passenger volume is on the rise. With barely a month left before Puja, the count will go up further,” said a Metro official.

The daily passenger count has surpassed 2,50,000.

The timings will remain unchanged. The first trains will leave the terminal stations at 7.30am. The last trains will leave at 9.30pm.

“The interval will be five minutes during the morning and evening rush hours,” said the official.

Starting Wednesday, 32 out of 256 trains will run between Dum Dum and Tollygunge (Mahanayak Uttam Kumar) stations, the carrier said.

“The Dum Dum-Tollygunge stretch is the busiest. That rush will only go up as the festive season comes closer. A train ending at Tollygunge can turn in the opposite direction. That will increase the frequency of trains between Tollygunge and Dum Dum,” said another official.

On Saturdays, the carrier runs 172 special trains for railway employees and essential service providers. On Sunday, there are 112 special trains.

A smart card will be mandatory for a Metro ride. Tokens will remain suspended.

Before the pandemic, the carrier used to run a maximum of 300 trains every day. The number of trains was increased to 258 in April this year, the most during the pandemic.
