The first of the three community centres planned for each of the three action areas of New Town was inaugurated by urban development minister Chandrima Bhattacharya on Tuesday. Located in Action Area I near the Biswa Bangla Gate, the G+2 community centre, with a Jamini Roy painting on a side, overlooks Unbox Park and provides space for citizen interaction and community gathering. The built-up area of the building totals approximately 29,000 sq ft and it has two banquet halls with two rooms each, roof top space, coffee shop, open air theatre, lawn and exhibition rooms. “The facility would be rented out for social purposes and family functions. The rooms adjoining the banquet halls have been added keeping in mind the requirements of wedding parties to dress up or stay over. We have not air-conditioned it to keep the rent affordable. Bookings will be available from December 1 and we already have a booking for December 2,” said NKDA chairman Debashis Sen. The rent of the banquet halls on the first and second floors has been fixed at Rs 10 per sq ft for 6,000 sq ft on each floor. The 6,000sq ft open terrace will be let out for Rs 8 per sq ft. The ground floor can be used for cultural programmes. The community centre for Action Area II is also in an advanced stage of construction.
