A man returning home on a two-wheeler after dropping his sister off at a bus stop was stopped and stabbed to death with a sharp weapon in Thakurpukur’s Silpara area on Wednesday morning.

Animesh Kumar Singh, 26, was attacked around 8am, police said.

“The residents of the area alerted us about the murder. We took Singh to SSKM Hospital, where he died,” said a senior police officer of Thakurpukur police station.

“We have detained a person for questioning based on the description provided by some of the bystanders and based on the CCTV camera footage collected from the area,” the officer added.

One of the residents tried to chase down the suspect on his motorbike.

“The suspect, who was wearing a yellow T-shirt, ran into a narrow lane where the two-wheeler wouldn’t enter. The man then disappeared towards Bhattacharjee-Para behind the murder spot,” said a man who lives close to the spot where Singh was killed.

“Ours is a quiet locality. No one can imagine such an attack here,” he said.

Employed with a private firm on Hyde Road, Singh would usually drop his sister at the bus stop on his two-wheeler, the police said.

“The assassin obviously was aware of his target’s daily routine,” the officer said. “Since it was early in the day, the road on which Singh was attacked was not busy.”

The man detained in connection with the murder was picked up from neighbouring Mansatala.

Singh’s sister said: “I received a call informing me that my brother met with an accident. After returning home, I was told that he was stabbed to death.”
