The decomposed body of a 61-year-old man, who had been charged with the murder of his father four years ago and was out on bail, was found inside his Baguiati house on Sunday evening.
Chandranath Chattopadhyay, who lived alone on the ground floor of his two-storey house at Baguiati’s Ashwininagar, was found dead by the police after residents of the area and one of his relatives complained of foul smell.
The relative lives on the first floor of the house.
Neighbours told a team from Baguiati police station that Chattopadhyay was last seen four days ago. The police suspect he died at least 72 hours before.
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said Chattopadhyay’s body was found in a sitting posture on the floor, leaning against a sofa.
The police said neighbours and relatives told them that Chattopadhay used to drink heavily every day.
A senior officer of the commissionerate said Chattopadhay also used to take a number of prescription drugs for a host of mental health problems.
He had been arrested on October 28, 2019, for allegedly suffocating his father to death. He spent several months behind bars and Baguiati cops even submitted a chargesheet against him in court.
Chattopadhay is married but his wife and children left the house and shifted to Bangalore. His elder brother lives in the US.
He was recently released on bail, after which he started drinking, the police are said to have learnt from relatives and neighbours. Several liquor bottles have been found in his home. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
