A 60-year-old widow who was alone at home in the city was allegedly raped on Saturday night by a distant relative, who had earlier been accused of clicking photographs of the woman without her knowledge.
Police said the woman’s sons and other family members had gone to celebrate Bhai Phonta when she was allegedly raped.
“The woman has mentioned in her statement that she was asleep when the accused, in his 20s, entered the house after removing tiles from the roof on Saturday night,” said an officer of the police station where a case has been registered.
“The woman woke up and found that someone was in the house and searching for something. When she saw the man’s face and raised an alarm, he grabbed her neck and started assaulting her.”
The man allegedly raped her before leaving the house.
The woman, who suffered multiple injuries, was taken to the NRS Medical College and Hospital for a medical examination. Based on her complaint, the police have arrested the accused.
A son of the woman told The Telegraph that the accused is a distant relative and stayed with the family for more than a decade.
The accused has been charged under IPC sections on rape, snatching, trespassing and grievous assault.
