Sharmila Chatterjee, a resident of Haridevpur’s Banerjeepara, was brought to the hospital around 5pm on Sunday. She passed away around 10.30pm, said the official.

“She was brought to our hospital from RSV Hospital in Tollygunge. Her condition was critical when she was admitted to our hospital,” said the official.

“The death certificate mentioned sepsis as the primary cause of death and dengue shock syndrome is mentioned as the secondary cause.”

According to a doctor at another private hospital, what the death certificate said was that sepsis was caused by dengue.

“The woman’s immediate cause of death was sepsis or septicemia. This happened because of dengue. The antecedent cause of her death is dengue,” he said.

A Kolkata Municipal Corporation official said the woman had been running a fever for three or four days before she was admitted to hospital.

“We always urge people not to neglect fever. Visita doctor if you have fever because the condition at times deteriorates rapidly,” said an official of the KMC’s health department.

This is the second known case of dengue death in the Kolkata municipal area this year.

A 12-year-old boy from Kalighat who had tested positive for dengue died on August 4. In all, 292 new dengue cases were reported from across the state on Saturday.

Kolkata was “one of the six districts” where the numbers were higher than the rest, a health department official has said on Sunday.
