A 52-year-old woman’s body was found floating in a well on the compound of her Haridevpur home on Thursday night.

The woman’s niece has alleged that she was forced to take her life because of mental torture by her husband, son and daughter-in-law, police said.

Based on the niece’s complaint, the police started a case of abetment to suicide against the three accused and arrested them on Friday.

Uma Das, a resident of Kailash Ghosh Road, was found in a well in her house around 8.30pm on Thursday.

“We received a complaint that she was under tremendous mental pressure from her husband, son, and daughter-in-law, which triggered her death,” said an officer of Haridevpur police station where the complaint was lodged.

The father and son run a grille business, the police said.

All three have been booked under sections of abetment to suicide and common intention.

The police said the woman’s body has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.

“As there are specific allegations of mental torture, it is important to find out the exact cause of death,” said the officer.

The charges against the husband, son and daughter-in-law, if proven, could lead to a maximum punishment of 10 years of imprisonment.
