The police said around 6.58am on Friday, a woman was spotted lying on the footpath off Santosh Roy Road in Thakurpukur.

People in the neighbourhood identified her as Sandhya Sardar, whose home was not far from the place where she was found.

She was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where the doctors declared her dead.

A post-mortem conducted on her later in the day suggested that she had been strangled to death, the police said.

Sardar is a resident of Haridevpur where she lived with her husband Shyama Prasad Sardar and mother-in-law.

The police said they were trying to examine the footage from the closest CCTV cameras installed in the area.

“We are yet to ascertain the circumstances under which the woman came to the spot where she was found,” said an officer in Thakurpukur police station.

Sardar’s body was found on the footpath near an abandoned under construction building. Her husband was being questioned at the police station on Friday night.

The cops are trying to find out more details about the last whereabouts of the deceased woman.

The deceased woman’s mother-in-law, who was questioned at her home on Friday evening, has purportedly claimed ignorance about the whereabouts of her daughter-in-law.
