A 47-year-old father of two allegedly hanged himself from a hook on the ceiling of his house while talking to his wife on a video call early on Monday.

Prasun Banerjee, who police said was manager of the treasury department of a bank’s Shakespeare Sarani branch, has left a purported suicide note mentioning the names of a few men and a woman whom he had held responsible for his death, police said.

“A suicide note has been found. A few names are in the note. We are in the process of contacting them,” said an officer of Garfa police station.

An officer said Banerjee had been under stress.

His wife, who stays in Gujarat with their two daughters, had alerted the local police station around 3.35am when Banerjee allegedly hanged himself while talking to her on video call.

Officers rushed to the apartment at Drishti Abasan (68 Purbachal Main Road), broke open the door and found him hanging.

“When officers reached the spot, the man was found hanging with a nylon rope from a hook on the ceiling of the living room. He was declared dead at MR Bangur Hospital around 5.35am,” said the officer.

An officer involved in the probe said the police had found that Banerjee was earlier posted in a bank in Gujarat and had been transferred to the Kolkata branch 10 months ago.

He came to Kolkata, while his wife and daughters, who are studying in Ahmedabad, continued to stay there, the police said.

Banerjee’s family are expected to reach Kolkata on Monday.

The Telegraph could not contact the family to verify the statements made by the police officers.

The police said they did not receive any specific complaint from the family till Monday afternoon.

Garfa police station has started an unnatural death case.

The body has been sent for post-mortem.
