A member of the managing committee of a school in Narendrapur and a local panchayat functionary were among the four persons arrested between Thursday night and Friday morning for their alleged involvement in the attack on some teachers at the school on January 27.
Two of the accused were rounded up from Bishnupur, in South 24-Parganas, and the other two from Bonhooghly, near the school, police said.
Around 700 students study at the school from Classes V to XII.
Among the arrested, Alok Naru and the managing committee member are among the four named in the FIR as accused in connection with the assault.
The two others named in the FIR are the headmaster of the school and the a man named Akbar.
Metro is not naming the managing committee member who has been arrested and the headmaster to ensure that the school’s identity is not revealed.
The attack followed allegations that a student of the school had been raped by a teacher.
A section of teachers, however, had told the police that the attack had been plotted by the headmaster in an attempt to force them to withdraw a complaint of irregularities against him. The headmaster had denied the allegation.
The police said the headmaster, who has been suspended by the state secondary education board till the Madhyamik exams are over, and the fourth accused are at large.
Students of at least four schools are writing their Madhyamik papers at the Narendrapur institution.
“Alok is a member of the local panchayat. He and the school committee member were rounded up from Bonhooghly,” an officer at the Baruipur police district said.
The other two — Ashim Ishar and Prabir Sardar — were picked up from Bishnupur, 23km from the school.
“A video that has gone viral shows Prabir attacking the teachers at the school,” the officer said. “Ashim is accused of pelting some teachers with stones while the gang was on its way out.”
Altogether, eight men are in custody in connection with the attack on the teachers. “Six of the eight men are among the 50 accused who have not been named in the FIR, which the teachers had lodged on Saturday,” the officer said. “They have been arrested based on CCTV footage and circumstantial evidence.”
