Findings of a preliminary inquiry suggest Lalita Sardar had been strangulated.

The police arrested her husband, Haripada Sardar, from Mograhat in South 24-Paragans on Sunday evening on the basis of a note found in the house.

“The note, apparently written by the husband, said he had murdered his wife as she was disturbing his spiritual life. He had also mentioned that he would end his life on the railway tracks,” said the joint commissioner of police, crime, Sankha Shubhra Chakrabarty.

Lalita and Haripada stayed at a hut in Kalikapur, in the Anandapur police station area.

Around 2.30pm, neighbours found the door of the Sardars’ house open and Lalita lying unconscious inside. Haripada was nowhere to be seen.

The police were informed and the woman was taken to hospital, where she was declared dead.

“A note was found in the house. Based on that we started looking for Haripada Sardar. During the investigation, we learned that the woman worked as a domestic help and her husband was unemployed,” said an officer of Anandapur police station.

The police said they started tracking Haripada through his mobile phone’s tower location and tracked him down to a location in Mograhat.

“Haripada Sardar has admitted to killing his wife,” said an officer.

The body has been sent for post-mortem and a murder case has been started against Haripada.

“The man has claimed that he wanted a spiritual life and his wife was not allowing him to have one. So he decided to kill her. After killing her, he said he wanted to end his life as well to attain moksha (liberation from the cycle of death and birth),” an officer said.

Sardar will be produced in court on Monday.
