A 32-year-old woman was found hanging in her Ballygunge apartment early on Thursday.

Police said the woman’s husband — a senior bank official — was in the house when the alleged incident happened. Their two children, seven and four years old, were asleep.

Investigators suspect the injuries found on Reshmi Verma, a homemaker and a resident of Dover Park, were of suicide.

“Her husband Asish Verma was the first to find her hanging. According to the statement of a security guard, the husband was crying when he called the guard seeking help around 7.30am on Thursday. The guard went to their apartment and found the woman hanging. Then the police were informed,” said an officer of Ballygunge police station.

The body was sent for post-mortem and later in the day. The preliminary opinion of the autopsy surgeon suggested that the woman had hanged herself, the police said.

“The victim has not left any suicide note. What appears from the preliminary inquiry is that she had ended her life after sending the children to bed. It is unclear if her husband was awake or asleep when this happened. No suicide note has been found,” said the officer.

The Vermas live in an apartment on the second floor of the five-storeyed bank staff quarters, the police said.

A police officer at Lalbazar said they had not received any complaint from the family of the deceased, originally from Hazaribag. “We will examine her mobile phone and her belongings to check if there was any foul play,” said the officer.

The officer added that the police had not been able to examine the family members in detail on Thursday as they were in a state of trauma.

An unnatural death case has been started at Ballygunge police station.
