A 23-year-old biker died as his motorcycle crashed into the footpath along Hastings Park Road in Alipore early on Saturday morning.
The pillion rider has been admitted to hospital with critical injuries.
The crash was reported around 2.15am on Hastings Park Road — a stretch between Belvedere Road and Alipore Judges Road.
Mohammad Sohail, 23, who was riding the bike, apparently lost balance and climbed the footpath.
Police said Sohail and Imam Hossain Gaji, 24, were flung off the bike and they landed on the road a few meters away.
Both were taken to SSKM Hospital where Sohail was declared dead. Gaji is battling for life.
The police said both of them were wearing helmets but Sohail was riding the bike in a state of intoxication. The motorcycle is registered in the name of a friend.
“The medical report of the deceased mentioned that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash,” said an officer of the Alipore police station.
Drink driving is a crime and can result in imprisonment. It attracts a penalty Rs 2,000 for the first time and Rs 3,000 for the second and subsequent offences.
“Such riders also tend to speed on empty stretches. In the majority of the cases, they fail to negotiate the speed and crash into the median divider or the footpath,” said an officer of the traffic department.
