Anjali was released from the hospital later in the day, the police said.

The accused, identified as Avijit Sarkar, has been arrested and a case of attempt to murder has been drawn up against him.

Anjali had stepped out of her house on Utpal Dutt Sarani around 7am and was walking towards Malancha cinema when Sarkar, in his late 20s, allegedly accosted her.

He pulled out a knife and attacked Anjali, the police said.

The woman tried to resist and ended up receiving stab injuries on her right hand and face. Sarkar fled the spot as Anjali raised the alarm, the police said.

“One of Anjali’s acquaintances spotted her bleeding and informed Golf Green police station. She was rushed to MR Bangur Hospital,” said a senior officer of the police station.

“Based on the information provided by the eyewitness and the victim, we have arrested the accused person.”

A preliminary investigation has revealed that Sarkar used to work as a delivery agent of an online food supply chain but quit the job recently.

On Friday, he had apparently met Anjali, the police said.

The police said Sarkar told them that Anjali had taken his mobile power bank and
some money when they met. She apparently refused to return them even after repeated requests .

“It’s too early but we are trying to find out the reason behind the sudden attack. It can’t be just a missing power bank and some money,” the officer said.
