A 22-year-old nursing student who shared a rented apartment with two other women was found dead on the terrace of the building in East Jadavpur on Monday morning.
Police said Mallika Das, 22, a fourth-year nursing student at a private college, was found hanging from the grille gate of the terrace of the four-storeyed building where she lived.
She was taken to a local hospital where she was declared dead.
According to the statement of one of her roommates, she was last heard speaking over the phone with a man.
“According to the statement, the victim was last speaking to a male friend and they were fighting over something,” said an officer of East Jadavpur police station, where an unnatural death case has been started.
Mallika, who was from Bankura, reportedly left a few “notes” on her mobile phone.
“She used to send messages to herself on WhatsApp. Around a fortnight ago, she wrote to herself that there were a few small pockets in her laptop bag where she had kept some money. She mentioned the names of some people to whom she wanted to return some money. The amounts mentioned were all small and it did not look like she was in any serious debt,” said the officer.
In her last message, she purportedly wrote that no one was responsible for her death, the police said.
Her family in Bankura was informed about her death on Monday morning. No complaint was lodged by the family till the evening. The body will undergo post-mortem on Tuesday.
The police said Mallika lived in a room on the second floor of the building, which she shared with two other women. Her roommates did not find her in the room when they woke up in the morning. “On searching, she was found on the terrace, hanging,” said an officer.
The police were informed around 9am, following which a team of officers went to the spot and brought Mallika down.
Officers of East Jadavpur police station said they did not find any indication of foul play till Monday evening.
