Over 19,000 of the 50,000-odd candidates who had applied for a review of their higher secondary (HS) papers have registered an increase in their marks, an official of the West Bengal HS council said on Monday.

Among the 19,000, marks of 80 per cent candidates have increased in the range of 1-5 in the aggregate. Marks of some candidates have increased by as much as 20.

This year, 88.44 per cent of the candidates passed the exams, the results of which were declared on June 10.

After that, there had been protests in many places by students who had failed to clear the exam.

The change in marks comes at a good time. Filing of applications for undergraduate college seats started on July 18 and will go on till August 5.

State higher secondary council president Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya had earlier said the council expected the review in all subjects would help address the grievances of the candidates unhappy with their marks.

“The review results are bound to impact overall pass percentage as well. Exact assessment of a rise in pass percentage will be done later,” said a council official.

Last year, the state HS council had announced that “almost 100 per cent” candidates had crossed the higher secondary barrier following a review of the marks of 18,000 students who were initially declared unsuccessful. Last year, the exams could not be conducted because of Covid.

This year, for the first time in the exam’s history, students wrote their papers at their respective schools.

Over 47,000 students had scored more than 90 per cent in aggregate, out of 7,20,862 candidates who wrote the HS papers this year.

Overall, 78.5 per cent candidates scored more than 60 per cent in aggregate, which is a record, sources said.

“Since most institutions barring Jadavpur University and three colleges under Ramakrishna Mission, will admit students based on the Plus-II results, a rise in marks would help the students,” said an official.
