Fifteen people were arrested during raids at a call centre in Sector V and a placement agency in Salt Lake by the Bidhannagar commissionerate on Friday.
The persons arrested have been accused of duping people across the country and abroad. Eight men were arrested from Techno Pro Solutions (P) Ltd in Sector V’s Ananya Chambers by a team from the Sector V police station early on Friday.
According to the officers, during the raid they found the call centre employees making international calls through VOIP, which makes tracing the calls difficult for law enforcement agencies. “All the callers knew that they were duping people by posing as representatives of Microsoft and other software majors. They had received extensive training and would pose as members of technical support teams of these software companies. The callers would tell the victims that they were under a virus attack and would offer to repair the operating systems for a fee,” said the officer.
In Salt Lake, a team from the commissionerate’s detective department received a tip-off that a “placement agency” was being run where the employees were calling up job aspirants with offers of high-paying jobs against payment. “The agency would snap all ties with a job aspirant after he would pay the agency,” said the officer.
The name of the placement agency raided on Friday was Collosal Infotech Pvt Ltd. The police arrested seven employees from the office. “They would also cheat foreign nationals by posing as representatives of top global software majors,” said the officer.
