Eleven people were arrested late on Thursday for allegedly operating a call centre in Sector V that duped people in India as well as in other countries.
Police said the accused would pose to their targets as representatives of software and insurance companies, and telecom service providers. A team from the Bidhannagar commissionerate’s detective department raided the call centre — AKS Pvt Ltd, located at the SDF building in Sector V — and found those present making international calls through the VoIP (voice over internet protocol) system.
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said they had received information that a call centre named AKS Pvt Ltd was duping people.
People at the centre, according to the information, were calling up their intended victims posing as representatives of major software providers and offering solutions to problems related to computers.
The accused would also allegedly call up people in India and promise large sums of money as claims on their “dormant insurance policies”.
“The arrested men have confessed that they duped foreign nationals by calling them up posing as officials of a software firm. They would warn them against a virus attack on their computers and offer help. After being given access to the computers, they would siphon off money from their accounts using various payment gateways. They have also cheated people from across India,” said a police officer.
The officer said the call centre had been operational for several months and the accused had duped hundreds of foreign nationals as well as Indians.
The 11 accused were produced in a court in Salt Lake and remanded in judicial custody.
The police have seized several computers, cellphones and documents from the call centre.
