A 10-year-old girl from Narayanipur in South 24-Parganas, who had tested positive for dengue, died at a nursing home in Ballygunge on Wednesday.

Tithi Halder, the girl, and her family shifted to Patuli’s D Block about two months back. They went back to their village after Viswakarma Puja, said Bappaditya Dasgupta, councillor of Ward 101, which covers D Block in Patuli.

“When she came back last week, she was running a temperature,” he said. She was admitted to a government hospital, from where she was shifted to another government hospital before being admitted to the nursing home in Ballygunge.

Several dengue deaths have been reported from the city, as well as the rest of the state, this year. Neither the state government nor the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has disclosed any figure on how many people have died of the disease.

Dasgupta said 178 dengue cases had been reported from his ward so far this year, compared with the 1,300-odd cases reported in 2022.

Mayor Firhad Hakim had said on Friday the number of dengue infections in the Kolkata municipal area stood at 4,779 since January.

Over 970 fresh dengue cases were reported in Kolkata in the week ending last Friday, according to figures shared by Hakim.

Hospital fined

The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission on Wednesday asked a hospital in Teghoria to pay Rs 10,000 to a woman who was given a blanket long after she had asked for it.

The woman was admitted to the hospital with dengue. She was shivering and asked for an extra blanket, Ashim Banerjee, chairperson of the commission, said on Wednesday.

The woman was given the blanket after 30 minutes.

The family was not given any grievance redressal register during discharge. When they wrote the grievance on a piece of paper, a doctor allegedly snatched it “We have asked the hospital to pay Rs 10,000 to the patient,” Banerjee said.
