A 10-year-old boy was electrocuted after he came in contact with a high-tension wire on the terrace of a building while trying to extricate a kite that had got entangled with the wire.
Mohammad Rehan, who was hospitalised with burns on Wednesday night, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon. The incident happened on the second-floor terrace of a building in Anandapur, off EM Bypass in east Kolkata, around 9.10pm on Wednesday.
Police said the incident happened at the house of Rehan’s maternal uncle, which he was visiting with his parents.
“According to the family’s statement, Rehan had climbed a ladder to reach the roof of a room on the terrace where usually no one goes. His screams alerted people downstairs. He was taken to SSKM Hospital,” said an officer.
An unnatural death case has been registered with Anandapur police station.
The police said they did not receive any complaint from the dead child’s family till Thursday evening.
The police said they had asked the state electricity board to investigate the matter and find out the cause of the electrocution.
