The young can be the keepers of traditional dance forms, thereby ensuring their sustenance and survival. The annual programme of the Sriparna Bose-led dance group, Ahaban, was a testament to how the young can become effective vessels for Odissi. Held at Rabindra Tirtha, the event witnessed the participation of around 50 students of the troupe. The experience of watching the young learners, decked up in traditional attire and beaming with vitality, getting their tribhangis and their hastamudras right did bring a sense of jubilation.

Although the segments on basic Odissi steps seemed protracted, the recitals of mangalacharan and batu by five-year-olds belied their age. The pallavissaveri, basant and kirwani — presented by the seniors testified to their understanding of the body language and the intricacies of the form. What stood out was Bose’s presence throughout the event as she directed the youngsters to the rhythmic beats.
