After several leaks and then an official teaser, Google has finally unveiled Pixel Fold in all its glory, hoping to bring competition to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.

From the demonstration, it appears that there are a few differences from Samsung’s device. First, the phone appears slimmer. Second, there is no gap when the phone is shut like a book. But there is no stylus support which Samsung offers. And the South Korean company appears to be offering more in terms of simultaneous multi-app support.

The phone is not as tall as the one from Samsung, so the outside screen looks more like a regular smartphone. The 5.8-inch exterior screen gives way to 7.60-inch screen when unfolded. In the hand, the Pixel Fold’s wider dimensions may make it feel different too.

Google said some apps are optimised for the Pixel Fold and are exclusive to the device, like Live Translate mode. You will see what the other person is saying, in your preferred language, on the interior screen facing you while the other person will see what you are saying, in their language, on the exterior screen. But the app will only come with Android 14 later this year.

There are five cameras on the phone. Three are on the back — a normal, ultrawide and 5x telephoto camera. There’s one on the exterior screen: a 9.5MP selfie camera. And you’ll find another 8MP camera on the interior screen. It’s going toe-to-toe with Samsung.

Being a premium device, it is powered by Tensor G2, which can make all the AI magic happen at the blink of an eye. Priced $1,799 (India launch or pricing hasn’t been announced), the phone is meant for early adopters of the folding phone. But remember, the next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold is only months away and rumours have so far been favourable.
