Get your hair mousse and texturiser ready, because it’s the summer of pixies! Wash-n-go styles have always been popular with Kolkatans in the humid months. However, for the post-pandemic summer chop, people are turning to super cropped and spikey pixies, particularly ones that are themed around popular shows.

Early this month, hairstylist Jolly Chanda who runs the popular 26-year-old salon Satin Rose Salon & Spa, gave Swastika Mukherjee a fierce, buzzed pixie, closely resembling Tommy Shelby’s sought-after undercut from Peaky Blinders. The buzzed sides and voluminous fringe is a great spin on Tommy’s macho crop. It also has more texture and needs very little blow drying.

“Swastika was the one who started the pixie craze in Kolkata many years ago. It was around the time when Bye Bye Bangkok came out I think. I had given her a pixie and then everybody wanted it,” Jolly shares.

The stylist thinks more and more people are going by the post-pandemic mantra of ‘seizing the moment’ and opting for a big makeover. “I think after the pandemic people just want to go for it and live it up and experiment. This is why so many people are opting for a major switch-up even if they have to let go of their long hair. During the pandemic, cropped dos were popular with people owing to health and safety issues. First responders or medical professionals had to wear caps all day and people were encouraged to wash their hair every day. Many people went for super short pixies because they are easier to manage,” Jolly adds.

Another pop culture-inspired styling that’s taking Kolkata by storm? Money Heist hair, of course! Satin Rose’s Instagram features a parade of low-maintenance, dishevelled pixie cuts resembling Tokyo’s (Ursula Corbero) hair which has a grown-out look.

“There are so many different kinds of pixies. There are asymmetric cuts which have cool uneven sides and there are Money Heist-inspired cuts with longer edges. These pixies work well for every age and can even make you look younger. So many people who are in defence are going for the big chop. A few days ago, someone came in and wanted a pixie and she told me, ‘No one would give me a full-blown pixie, they would just give me a boyish cut or a mushroom cut which are harder to manage,’” Jolly tells us.

If you’re still on the fence about getting a major chop, Jolly suggests a longer textured do which offers a lived-in, overgrown vibe. “A pixie bob can be great for people who want to play safe. There are some fringes near your eyebrows, some longer edges. You can add some texture and still keep some length,” Jolly points out.
