Designer Ratul Sood, known for his structured and smart men’s western wear in the occasionwear segment, recently launched a new collection of men’s Indian ethnic outfits under his label Burlingtons of Calcutta. The collection was launched on the ramp of the recently hosted gala wedding show in the city, Shaadi by Marriott Bonvoy at Ozone Convention Centre.

Inspired by Indian cultural influences and the contemporary style sensibility, the focus of the collection lies in a variety of sherwanis featuring contemporary cuts, the richness of embroidery work and the glamour of embellishments while being rooted to the Indian tradition.

“We wanted to focus on the sherwanis specifically for this season because we felt we wanted to change our entire way of presenting sherwanis. Our primary inspiration for this collection is the global young Indian. It has got a feeling of modernity with a lingering touch of the Indian roots. The collection is for people to wear it in any part of the world, be it New York, Kolkata or Delhi. We are well known for suits, jackets and western wear, but we are making a big push in the men’s ethnicwear, occasionwear segment in the Indian style, too,” said Ratul.

“The idea was to show people the entire talent we have in Indian menswear and want to be known as the best sherwani people in the city. The collection now caters to various wedding events, like sangeet, Mehndi. The uniqueness of the collection is the hand zardozi used in a modern way with the finesse in embellishment of cutdanas and beads, something which the artisans of Bengal are famous for. We have explored with cuts like anarkali, straight cuts, diagonal cuts and adorned the outfits with cummerbund, malas to get the whole look. The groom doesn’t have to go anywhere. It is a one-stop shop that he requires for the wedding,” he added.
