A little birdie recently told us that our favourite hangout spot on Lake Terrace Road is getting a bright and shiny makeover – well, the birdie was Mrs. Magpie herself! For its 10th anniversary, this adorable cafe and bakery is back in a new avatar — Mrs. Magpie 2.0, if you will.

The relaunch party of Mrs. Magpie was held at the Lake Terrace outlet amidst laughs, revelry and sweetness!

“For Mrs. Magpie’s design, I had Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in mind. It’s amazing that people really picked up on that. However, this time I feel we have our own look, it is Mrs. Magpie’s own look,” says the brand’s owner Sohini Basu.

Though the interiors channel the same colourful and sprightly aesthetic, the set-up is a lot more engaging and welcoming and the colour scheme is brighter and more vibrant.

“Covid has had a big impact on our new look. The brand has evolved. There are a number of new characters that have made their way into our desserts. Like the Buddy Pops, which are our version of cake pops and they add an element of fun and quirkiness to our vibe,” shares Sohini.

“Mrs. Magpie 2.0 is a grown-up Mrs. Magpie. We went for bolder, more mature colours and revamped the whole look. We rejigged the menu and added more savoury items. We want to be able to introduce this new look to all three outlets and eventually expand to 10 outlets,” reveals chef Andy Varma.

“Mrs. Magpie has always been a cute little space where people loved to hang out. It has always been uniquely vibrant and has stood out in the crowd. Keeping that aesthetic in mind, we have worked closely with Sohini to give Mrs. Magpie a new avatar,” says Shamik Chatterjee of Grinning Tree, the design firm that did the interiors for the space.

The new menu lines up classics like tarts, sandwiches, quiches and puffs to a decadent selection of pasta and craft sliders. The brand has also come up with an all-day breakfast, which is another reason to visit the cafe.

We spotted chef Shaun Kenworthy at the launch party, who had dropped in along with his wife, stylist Pinky Kenworthy and also made time to pose with Sohini Basu and chef Andy Varma.

“I’ve known Sohini for years, long before her Cordon Bleu and Mrs. Magpie days, and even before her fashion years working with Sabyasachi. She’s a great friend and she also has a great sense of aesthetics. When it first opened, Mrs. Magpie was the first of many and the re-branding has come out beautifully. I just love all the new additions. Looks like Pinky and my once-a-week Swiggy treat may become more often now,” said chef Kenworthy.

The sweetest part of the revamp

Mrs. Magpie has always been known for their quirky sweet treats and immaculate flavours, and its new menu is no different.

Keeping the most-loved flavours intact, the brand has created variations of flavour combinations like Fig and Chocolate and Blueberry Cream Cheese for cupcakes, Mishi Raspberry and Yoko Chocolate Macaroons. They also have a new range of sugar-free treats, which offer a guilt-free experience.

“When I opened a decade back, Mrs. Magpie was one of the first cafes in the city, and now the cafe culture has become so prominent here. But what’s great is that we have a loyal customer base who have supported us throughout and that makes all the difference,” says Basu.

Mishi Raspberry & Yoko Chocolate Macaroons: The Mishi Raspberry macaroons have a pleasant tartness to them, while the Yoko Chocolate ones are luxurious. They share a light texture and like all good macaroons, they melt away in your mouth as soon as you bite into them.

Sweet & Salty Cupcake: This adorable cupcake is just as delicious as it is cute. The cupcake is fudgy and moist while the frosting is all about creamy deliciousness. The best part? The cupcake is filled with salty caramel that oozes when you take a bite!

Sugar-free Lemon Tart: This tangy lemon tart is the perfect bite. The creamy meringue complements the tart lemon curd, while the tart base gives it the perfect textural contrast. Did we mention it’s sugar-free?

Pesto Caprese Pizza: This pizza has freshness in every bite. The pizza itself is chewy, and the cheese clings to it, creating the perfect bite. The pesto is fresh and the addition of fresh tomato slices and basil accentuates the flavours.

Aglio E Olio Chicken Sandwich: Think of the flavours of Aglio E Olio pasta and now imagine it in a delicious and irresistible sandwich! The classic peppery flavours are infused in every bite and the crusty bread makes for a wholesome base.
